Full Verbatim Transcription of Interview With Riff Fall

9/22/16

2:32 a.m.

Riff: I hadn’t really understood what I was getting myself into when I signed that contract. I lived with the terms for years, but I was still doing my own thing, trying to cut corners and most of the time, I stayed drunk or high. And I kept myself away from Kirka and her watchers as much as possible.

But the touring schedule was running me into the ground. My voice was shot, my body was shot, my mental state was impaired. Deep down inside, well, I just wanted it all to end. I didn’t want to live under Kirka’s thumb anymore. And whenever I was drunk or high, I talked a lot. I got really loud and I started blabbing, complaining about how I was a slave to Kirka and the record label. Rod—our manager—and Ricky would try to tell me to shut up, remember that part of our terms was to keep quiet about them. Anyway, I guess word was getting around—back to her that I was unhappy with the arrangement.

Then, one night in 2010, I’d been drinking whiskey for three days nonstop and couldn’t even think straight. We played a club in Savannah and after, apparently, I went back to the hotel and passed out. Sometime in the early morning, there was a knock at the door. Like so often happened, no one was there, so I got back in bed. Then I heard it—outside—the singing. I went to the balcony, opened the curtains, and on the other side of the sliding glass door leading to the balcony stood this girl. She was dripping with water like she’d just come out of the ocean and staring at me with eyes that seemed just as deep. She looked just like the women who’d been following me around the past few months, but she was singing—this voice was coming out of her. I knew what that meant.

Callie: Had you heard it before—the singing?

Riff: Oh, yeah. Kirka and the others used their song to keep us in line. Whenever they wanted us to do something, say something specific to the media, they would sing, put us in a trance of sorts—they could pretty much get us to do whatever they wanted then. So when I saw this girl on the balcony that night and heard her singing, I knew I was screwed.

Callie: How did she get on your balcony?

Riff: Well, that was the thing. I was on the sixth floor of the hotel, and while I was staring at her through the glass, I was trying to figure out how the hell she got up there. The hotel was on the riverfront and directly below was the swimming pool. I thought I was hallucinating—at first. When I opened the sliding glass door and went out on the balcony, she was still singing, and I asked her who she was, how she got up there. She told me she was there to warn me—that I wasn’t taking the contract seriously.
